Active learning is particularly useful in cases where the labeling cost is high. A common assumption is that an active learning algorithm is aware of the details of the underlying learning algorithm for which it obtains the data. However, in many practical settings, obtaining precise details of the learning algorithm may not be feasible, making the underlying algorithm in essence a black box Ð no knowledge of the internal workings of the algorithm is available, and only the inputs and corresponding output estimates are accessible. This makes many of the traditional approaches not applicable, or at the least not effective. Hence our motivation is to use the only data that is accessible in black box settings Ð output estimates. We note that accuracy will improve only if the learnerÕs output estimates change. Therefore we propose active learning criterion that utilizes the information contained within the changes of output estimates.}, keywords = {Active Learning, Sampling, Experiment Design, Black Box Settings, Model Independent, Output Estimates}, owner = {neil}, pdf_file = {Rubens-AL-in-BlackBoxSettings-AJS2011.pdf}, publisher = {Austrian Statistical Society (ASS)}, timestamp = {2011.06.28} }Impact:

Even though alumni connections represent networks, they have been mostly evaluated as tabular data (e.g. by providing average salary, employment rate, etc.). This ironically disregards all qualities of a network, from which an alumni network gets its name. It is desirable to evaluate an alumni network as a network, because networks have the potential to provide very insightful information. Evaluation of alumni networks as a network has not been feasible in the past due to data fragmentation (neither universities nor companies willing to share meaningfully significant data in its entirety). Recently the feasibility of such analysis has changed, due to new trends towards democratization of information, accelerated by the Web 2.0 user-generated content phenomenon and crowd-sourcing mentality. Utilizing web-crawlers, we actively harvested data and assembled a dataset on alumni in leadership positions in technology-based industries. Moreover, we included a high proportion of startup companies, which allowed us to evaluate alumni networks with respect to entrepreneurial as well as technology involvement. We show that by analyzing alumni connections as networks, it is possible to uncover new patterns, as well as provide a new way of examining the old.}, doi = {10.1109/EDUCON.2011.5773200}, html_file = {alumni-network-analysis-educon-2011}, impact-presentation-views = {350}, isbn = {978-1-61284-642-2}, num_citations = {1}, num_presentation_views = {700}, presentation = {http://www.slideshare.net/nrubens/alumni-network-analysis} }Impact: presentaiton views > 700 # of citations > 1
